Terminology for the
EME Module
An EME module provides controller functions and management functions
for the Switch 4007 chassis. Controller functions regulate physical
aspects of the chassis such as power and temperature. Management
functions regulate more sophisticated aspects such as system
configuration, software downloads, and obtaining SNMP data. Because it
has these two main functions, an EME module operates with four pieces
of software:

EMC (controller) boot software
■
EMC (controller) operational software
■
EME (management) boot software
■
EME (management) operational software
Clarifying Acronym
Use
Different uses of the same acronym (EME) can be confusing, so bear this
terminology in mind:

In this chapter, when we refer to the module as a whole, we use the
term
EME module
or, even simpler,
the module
.

In this chapter, when we refer to EME boot or operational software on
the module, we use terms like
EME boot software
or, even simpler,
EME boot
.
Terms for Redundant
EME Modules
In releases prior to 3.0.0, the active EME was called the
Master
in the CLI
displays. Beginning with release 3.0.0, the term changed to
Primary
.
In releases prior to 3.0.0, the inactive EME was called the
Slave
in the CLI
displays. Beginning with release 3.0.0, the term changed to
Secondary
.
