Virtual UNI
As defined in the basic UNI specification, each ILMI MIB is intended to
maintain management information about a single interface. Each
interface is assumed to connect a single user to a single switch port and
all ILMI information is exchanged directly between users and switches.
With the advent of VP tunneling, in effect more than one user is attached
to a port. Each of these users requires a signaling channel and an ILMI.
For this purpose, the
Virtual UNI
is defined. Each Virtual UNI has its own
ILMI services including a UNI MIB, UNI signaling, and management
functions. The Virtual UNIs are distinguished by their VPI values.
Signaling —
External Links
This section describes establishing a switched virtual channel by signaling.
As discussed previously, a virtual channel is made up of two types of links:
External links (connections) between ports of adjacent ATM devices
Internal links between input and output ports of an ATM device stored
in the ATM switch matrix.
These two types of links are established in two different ways. The
external links are established by signaling; the internal links are
established by routing.
