implemented by the ILMI — Integrated Local Management Interface. The

Designing ATM
Networks
An ATM Network uses the following pieces of equipment as basic
building blocks:
Servers or end stations
— These can be equipped with one or more
ATM adapters (for example, ATMLink S-Bus 155) which allow direct
connection of the end-station to an ATM switch.
An ATM edge device
— The edge device serves as an interface
between LANs and an ATM switch. For example, the SuperStack II
Switch 2700 unit for Ethernet and Switch 2000 for Token Ring.
An ATM switch
— The ATM switch such as the CoreBuilder 7000
family ATM switch provides the central switching service between end
users.
Router with ATM downlink
— The internal ATM Adapter allows
routing between multiple emulated LANs (for example, a NETBuilder II
with ATM or a CoreBuilder 2500 with one or two ATM interfaces).
ATM Network
Examples
In this section, several examples of ATM networks and details of how they
are built are presented.
Classical IP ATM
Networks
The simplest ATM Network, called a Classical IP ATM network, connects
end-user equipment such as workstations and servers directly to an ATM
switch. This creates a very high performance workgroup without using
Ethernet or Token Ring technology. Connectivity to non-ATM networks
can be achieved through a router. The only ATM equipment needed for
this kind of network is one or more ATM switches, such as the
CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch and end client workstations and
servers with an ATM adapter.
Building Classical IP ATM Networks
You can use the CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch in Classical IP
configurations to connect a workgroup.
The CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch can be employed in a network
using the IP-over-ATM protocol to connect workstations, servers, and
routers. In this configuration, the CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch
uses the basic ATM protocols (ILMI, Signalling, IISP) for connecting
