The determination of the ATM interface type and IME type is discussed in
the following sections.
Edge-Device Peer
If the peer device is an edge-device or ATM end-station (user) the
parameters are determined as follows:
ATM interface type—the ATM interface type is set automatically to
UNI.
IME type—the IME type is set to Network-Side.
Network-Device Peer
If the peer device is a network device (node) the parameters are
determined as follows:
ATM interface type—the IME inspects the values of ATM Layer Device
Type and ATM Layer UNI Type from the peer IME and determines the
ATM interface type according to the tables below.
IME type—the IME inspects the values of ATM Layer Device Type and
ATM Layer UNI Type from the peer IME and determines the IME type
according to the tables below.
The following tables show how auto-discovery operates for each of the
three types of peer switch. In all the tables, the local switch is a 3Com
switch running ILMI 4.0.
Table 8, Table 9—The peer switch is a 3Com switch running ILMI 4.0
Table 10, Table 11, Table 12—The peer switch is a 3Com switch
running ILMI 3.5 or less
Table 13, Table 14, Table 15—The peer switch is a non-3Com switch
3Com Switch Peer Running ILMI 4.0
When the peer switch is a 3Com switch, E-IISP is the preferred protocol.
Since the peer is also running ILMI 4.0, auto-discovery is operational and
acts to configure both switches to E-IISP or IISP as follows:
When auto-discovery detects that the peer device is a 3Com switch, it
automatically resets the factory default interface type UNI to E-IISP.
When one switch is set to IISP and the other to E-IISP, auto-discovery
resets the first to E-IISP.
When both switches are set to IISP, auto-discovery does not make any
changes.
