switching engines are hot swappable to ensure continuous operation
during configuration and servicing. For more information about hardware
redundancy, see Chapter 7 in the Installation Guide
.
LANE Redundancy
The CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch also provides redundant LANE
services. Each switch contains a complete set of LES and LECS
functionality. In case of failure, LANE services are transferred to another
CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch elsewhere in the network. The
highly reliable LANE redundancy facility is managed by the CoreBuilder
7000 switches themselves and is not dependent on external
management. For more information about LANE redundancy, see “LAN
Emulation Redundancy” on page 153 in the Operations Guide.
LANE Security
The CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch provides a LANE security system
which controls the access of a LEC requesting to join an ELAN. For each
ELAN, you can grant join privileges selectively to individual LECs or to
groups of LECs sharing the same network prefix. For more information
about LANE security, see “LANE Security” on page 161 in the Operations
Guide.
Traffic Management
Automatic congestion management in the CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM
switch platform works to prevent cell loss. A variety of flow control
mechanisms, including Broadcast Suppression, EFCI and CLP bit setting
support help to keep cells and frames from being dropped even under
intense loads.
The CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch supports a rate based algorithm
with Explicit Forward Congestion Indication (EFCI), explicit rate Resource
Management (RM) cells and early packet discard. For more information
about Traffic Management, see “Traffic Management” on page 135 in
the Operations Guide.
ATM Networks
The CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch supports the following types of
ATM networks:
LAN Emulation
The CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch uses LAN Emulation to allow
legacy LAN devices to communicate over ATM without having to change
existing network layer protocols and application software. Using LAN
Emulation and device management, virtual networks can be defined and
