Overview
The OfficeConnect Gateway is an IP router designed for optimal use with
networks that use dynamic IP addressing. For most individuals using the
OfficeConnect Gateway for shared Internet access, dynamic IP addressing
is the type of addressing scheme most often utilized by Internet Service
Providers (ISPs). It is also the type of addressing prevalent in many existing
corporate networks. It is most likely that your computer or computers are
already set up for dynamic IP addressing.
If, however, you do require the use of static IP addresses for your
network, use the information in this chapter to set up and configure your
OfficeConnect Gateway for use in a static environment.
Using the Gateway
in a Static IP
Environment
If your computer (workstation) has a static IP address and you want to
continue to use it on your network with the OfficeConnect Gateway, you
must make certain changes to the default parameters of the
OfficeConnect Gateway to allow your statically-configured PC to “talk”
to it during the initial configuration of the OfficeConnect Gateway.
The OfficeConnect Gateway is designed by default to work with a
dynamically-assigned network. The instructions in this section are for
advanced users only.
By default, the OfficeConnect Gateway will set itself up automatically as
the “gateway” for computers on the LAN to access the WAN. However, if
a computer on the same LAN is set up for static instead of dynamic IP
addressing, it will have a fixed IP address assigned as its “Gateway” or
“Router” entry that is not recognizable by the OfficeConnect Gateway.
In this case, when you connect your statically configured computer to the
OfficeConnect Gateway and turn on both for the first time, the
OfficeConnect Gateway will not be able to “talk” to your workstation,
