Overview of
Components
This section provides a general description of the various components of
the VCX system.
■
Authentication server — Performs authentication (such as validating a
username and password), authorization (such as verifying if a user is
allowed to make an international call), and user specific routing
and/or translation (for instance, if a user uses a personal speed dial
number).
■
Directory server — Performs routing and translation functions. The
routing function identifies, selects, and prioritizes all the possible
routes for a given call. The translation function manipulates the access
number or URL as a call propagates through the system.
■
Web provisioning server — Performs network configuration for the
authentication server and directory server.
■
Call Processor server — Some of the Call Processor server functions
include authenticating incoming calls using trusted end points or
challenges, generating CDRs (Call Detail Reports) for terminal end
points, acting as a redirect server, performing parallel or sequential
forking, event logging, and acting as a call governor.
■
SIP Phone Downloader — Loads an application image on to a 3Com
phone so that it can support a SIP protocol. After the application
image has been successfully downloaded to the phone, the phone is
ready to use provided that the rest of the network components are
installed and configured.
■
Common Agent — Connects the authentication server, directory
server, and Call Processor server to Enterprise Management Suite
(EMS) or any SNMP-based management tool so that they can be
configured.
■
Unified Messaging System — Provides advance messaging features
such as a personal address book and find-me-follow-me call routing.
