A. BEFORE YOU START

1. Please read carefully through all these instructions.

2. Adult supervision and assistance are required at all times.

3. This kit is intended for children over 8 years of age.

4. This kit and the finished product contain small parts which may cause chocking if misused. Keep

away from children under 3 years of age.

5. To prevent possible short circuits, never touch the contacts inside the battery case with any metal.

6. Do not hold the moving arm when it is in operation as this will damage the gear and the motor.

7. Always wash your hands after playing with bubbles.

B. USE OF THE BATTERIES

1. This kit requires four AA, 1.5 volt batteries (not included).

2. For best results, always use fresh batteries.

3. Make sure you insert the batteries with the correct polarities.

4. Remove the batteries when not in use.

5. Replace exhausted batteries straight away to avoid possible damage.

6. Rechargeable batteries must be removed from the kit before recharging.

7. Rechargeable batteries should be recharged under adult supervision.

8. Do not attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries.

9. Do not mix old and new batteries.

10. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (NiCad or NiMH) batteries.

11. Make sure that the supply terminals in the battery case are not short circuited.

16. Decorate the front of your robot with the stickers provided.

Congratulations. Your Bubble Robot is complete. Now letʼs blow some bubbles!

G. HOW IT WORKS

The motor operates both the gear box and the fan. The gear box slows the speed of

the motor and turns the cam on the side of the gear box. As the cam spins, it makes

the link arm go up and down, which makes the long arm rise and fall. The fan blows

air out of the pipe.

The arm dips the bubble wand into the mixture and then lifts it into the flow of air from

the pipe. The mixture forms a film across the ring-shaped wand, which becomes a

stream of bubbles as air flows through the ring.

H. FUN FACTS

• Bubbles are made of air trapped in a skin of bubble mixture, which is made from

water and detergent.

• The skin is created by a special property of water called surface tension. It pulls the

particles of water at the surface together.

•  The  detergent  in  the  water  lets  the  skin  stretch  to  make  bigger  and  stronger

bubbles.

• Bubbles are spheres (and not cubes or pyramids) because a sphere is the shape

with the smallest surface area compared to the space inside.

• Bubble magicians make all sorts of interesting shapes by joining bubbles together.

When two bubbles are joined together, you'll see a disc at the point where they

join.

• You can often see swirls of colour in bubbles. They are caused by light reflecting

from the skin of the bubbles.

• Foam is made up of millions of bubbles joined together.

• The world record for the most people standing in a single bubble is nineteen!

I. WHATʼS NEXT

Make your own bubble mixture when the included mixture is used up. Mix two cups

of water with a quarter of a cup of liquid soap and a teaspoon of sugar.

C. CONTENTS

Also required: 4 x AA, 1.5 volt batteries (not included), small crosshead screwdriver

E. OPERATION

Shake the bubble mixture. Fill the tray with bubble mixture. Switch on the motor.

Watch as the Bubble Robotʼs arm dips into the mixture and the Robot blows clouds

of bubbles.

F. TROUBLESHOOTING

If the motor does not run:

• Check that you are using fresh batteries.

• Check that the batteries are inserted correctly in the battery case.

• Check that all four wires are touching the metal terminal caps.

• Check that all the gears and hinges are lubricated.

If the fan does not blow air out of the hole, the fan may be the wrong way round, or

you may have the batteries the wrong way round.

If there are no bubbles, check that there is enough bubble mixture in the tray.

12.  Turn  the  body  over.  Secure  the  two

halves  together  with  four  screws  (two  of

them inside the battery case).

13. Insert 4 x AA batteries into the battery

case.
14. Put the battery cover on the battery case

and secure with three screws. Switch on the

motor.  Check  that  the  long  arm  moves  up

and  down,  and  that  air  blows  out  of  the

robotʼs mouth. Switch off again. Refer to the

troubleshooting  guide  below  if  the  arm  or

fan are not working properly.

15.  Slot  the  Bubble  Robot  body  into  the

base. Secure the body to the base with two

large head screws.

6. Push the red wire from the motor and the spare

red wire from the switch into the terminal hole near

the switch and secure them with a terminal cap.
7.  Push  the  black  wire  from  the  motor  and  the

black  wire  from  the  battery  case  into  the  other

terminal hole and secure them with a terminal cap.

8. Push the bubble ring into the end of the long arm.
9. Put the long arm into place, making sure the pin at the top goes into the slot at the

end of the link arm, and that the pivot sits in its slot. Tip: hold the short extension of

the arm vertical, push the pin into the link arm, then rotate the arm to fit the pivot into

place.

10. Rest the short arm in place, making sure it fits into its bearing slot. Now lubricate

all the gears and joints. You can use a small amount of cooking oil for this.

D. ASSEMBLY

1. Take the gear box. Put the link arm in place as shown, with its pin in the hole on

the gear box case and the pin on the gear-box cam through its central slot.
2. Holding the link arm together with the gear box, slot the gear box into the rear

body, with the link arm on the opposite side to the switch.
3. Secure the gear box with two screws.
4. Push the fan onto the spindle of the motor (with the flat face nearest the motor).
5. Place the motor into its slot in the rear body, making sure that the worm gear inter-

locks with the teeth on the lower gear wheel.

11. Now carefully slide the front body over the top of the inner workings, making sure

that the arm bearings are in place but can still move.
