E. TROUBLESHOOTING

If the Squid Robot does not operate:

• Make sure that the metal parts of the wires are in contact with the terminals.
• Make sure you are using fresh batteries.

F. HOW IT WORKS

The

battery makes the motor’s

spindle

turn.

The

weight on the

spindle

is off to one

side,

so when the motor is running the weight

moves

round

in a circle.

This

keeps changing the centre of

gravity

of the

robot,

making the robot

vibrate quickly. The vibrations

makes the legs

lift one after the other, which makes the robot walk along.

G. FUN FACTS

• Squid Robot is an example of a vibrobot – a robot that moves using vibrations.
• Similar vibration systems are used in games controllers, phones and sports massage machines.
• Squids actually move through the water by flapping their wings and by jet propulsion – they squirt water from their bodies at high speed.
• Squids have eight arms, also known as tentacles. They also have two longer tentacles covered with suckers that they use to catch prey.
• Squids protect themselves by squirting black ink into the water around them, making them  hard to for predators to find.
• Giant squids grow to more than 13 metres long – most of the length is made up by their tentacles.
