PDH/SDH telecommunication network set-up can be done via 64 kbit/s or 2 Mbit/s C37.94
interface to transceiver type 21-219.
Communication quality in PDH telecommunication networks is usually lower than in SDH
telecommunication networks due to less stable master clocks. The bit error rate is typically

An SDH telecommunication network with an accurate master clock usually enables high quality
communication with very low bit error rate (BER10

Communication structure with transceiver 21-219 port
synchronized from SDH master clock

Setting up an SDH telecommunication network requires that transceiver 21-219 port is
synchronized from the SDH network master clock (see Figure
). The SDH multiplexer (SDH
MUX) must be configured to fulfil this requirement. The settings are vendor dependent, but
usually SDH MUX is to be set for re-timing, and the format is to be set according to G.704
standard (framed, structured, unstructured, and so on). The transparent format cannot be
used in SDH telecommunication networks because there is no synchronization available in the
transceiver 21–219 SDH port.
