The Hosts File
To identify ethernet devices quickly by name, the Macintosh
associates device addresses with simple name identifiers. This
information is stored in a file called “Hosts” located in the System
Folder.
“Hosts” is a simple ASCII text file and contains one-line entries
for each device. A typical entry looks like this:
a66se A 192.92.109.65
The entry is in three parts: name, identifier, and address.
Name:
Can be any name without spaces, convenient
to identify the device.
Identifier:
Should be A. This indicates that the
remaining information is the IP address of
the device.
Address:
The device IP address. You can find this in
the Ethernet Menu.
See the Diskus Manual for information on changing the IP
address should you need to.
NOTE: The Hosts file should be “loose” in the
System Folder. For example, do not have "Hosts"
open in the Text Editor.
