There are three popular ways to connect devices to an Ethernet
network: Thicknet, Thinnet, and Twisted Pair.
Thicknet
Thicknet, sometimes known as 10-Base-5, uses a thick coaxial
cable, usually yellow. This cable runs close to all the devices on
the network. A special connector called a "vampire tap" taps into
the cable at a point close to each device. A transceiver attaches to
the tap. A drop cable then connects the sub-D connector on the
transceiver to the sub-D connector on the device.
