The ping
Command
After you connect Diskus to a Unix workstation, you can check
the connection with the ping command. The ping utility is
available on most Unix workstations. It operates by sending
packets to another device on the network (i.e. Diskus) that ask for
an echo response. Ping Diskus from the workstation as follows:
At the
%
prompt, type
ping <diskus_name>
.
The workstation should respond with lines like the
following every one or two seconds:
64 bytes from ip_address icmp_set=24 ttl=225 time=5 ms
NOTE: If the ping command is not in the "path," the
workstation responds with the prompt
command
not found. See the documentation that came with
your workstation for the location of the ping
command.
If Diskus fails to respond to the workstation within
five to ten seconds, press C on the
workstation. See the installation information earlier in
this section to verify proper cabling and workstation
setup.
Press C to stop the ping command and
response.
