Metallic Cable
Metallic cable has a metal sheath ground shield within the insulation. This ground shield
must be connected to local ground to eliminate crosstalk and other interference on the line.
When cutting outer insulation ensure cable pair insulation is not cut.
NOTE
The following information is generic in nature. Local procedures
take precedence.
WARNING
If a joint buried plant is used, check the cable sheath for voltage
according to local practices. If voltage is present, do not proceed
with the installation. Contact your supervisor for instructions; do
not proceed until the voltage hazard is eliminated.
To install metallic cable, complete the following steps:
1. Prepare the metallic cable as outlined below or according to local practices.
2. Ring cut the plastic outer cable sheath 9 inches above the upper cone shaped sleeve.
Remove the entire sheath above the ring cut.
3. Ring cut the cable ground shield at the same place as the outer sheath. Remove the entire
ground shield above the cut to expose the plastic core wrap.
4. Ring cut the core wrap 1/2 inch higher than the sheath and shield cuts. Pull off the
plastic wrap to expose the cable pairs.
5. Install a bond clamp to sandwich the plastic sheath and the ground shield according to
local practices. Ensure positive contact between the clamp and the ground shield.
6. Connect a solid No. 6 AWG ground wire between the bond clamp and the cabinet ground
bar.
7. Secure the ground wire under the containment bracket at the front of the rear chamber
floor.
8. Confirm ground circuit continuity.
9. Install binder group identification ties. Remove the unit binders. The cabinet is ready to be
spliced.
10. Splice and tag with cable identity ties according to local practices. Replace the conduit
chamber panel beneath the End Chamber.
