Normal flight
In calm air the BIBETA 4 best glide ratio is achieved with completely
released brakes. Light brake will result in the minimum sink configu-
ration. In headwind and descending air the glide performance over
the ground can be improved by appropriate use of the accelerate
system.
Despite the very high degree of stability an active flying technique is
recommended in turbulent air. If this is done collapses can be just
about completely avoided. Active technique means flying in a lightly
braked condition keeping the glider always vertically above the crew,
that is to say by correcting roll and pitch disturbances.
Be careful not to let the speed fall below minimum, and don’t overre-
act with the brakes.
Turns
The BIBETA 4 has precise braking and steering behaviour. It re-
sponds directly and progressively to increasing brake application, as
soon as the brake line free play is taken up. Thanks to the well-coor-
dinated nature of the wing it is not necessary to supplement brake
application with weight shift for steering.
Tip: If a brake line were to break the BIBETA 4 can be
steered with the rear risers (D-risers) if necessary.
Accelerated flight
The BIBETA 4 also remains exceptionally stable in accelerated flight.
Because of the higher forces associated with higher speeds, how-
ever, a collapse could turn out to be somewhat vigorous, in that pa-
ragliders fly at a lower angle of attack at their upper speeds, thus be-
coming generally less stable. (see also chapter «Collapses»).
Finally, when encountering strong turbulence while accelerated pull
the trim loops down fully, before it becomes necessary to use the
brakes to stabilise the wing structure. Thanks to its high stiffness and
stability the BIBETA 4 can be flown through light turbulence while re-
maining accelerated. (see also chapter «Speed system/Trim»).
Caution: When the trimmers are open the brake handles will
be in a noticeably higher position than in unaccelerated
(normal)
flight.
Caution: While, and shortly after opening the trimmers, the
BIBETA 4 displays a distinct increase in speed. In this condi-
tion the canopy could react unfavourably to turbulence.
