We recommend that you use the following basic settings to achieve
«real air» best glide:
-
at 10 km/hr headwind, approx. 15 % acceleration
-
at 20 km/hr headwind, approx. 50 % acceleration
-
with no wind, do not brake at all
-
with a tailwind, gently brake the glider to fl y with the best sink rate
Asymmetrical collapses
The EPSILON 5 conveys a highly satisfying solid feel. An active fl ying
style will virtually eliminate collapses. Even larger collapses (over
50%) are easy to control. For these more extreme situations we re-
commend the following pilot reactions:
If you are clear of obstacles its best to allow the glider to initially turn
at the early stage of the recovery whilst assessing the situation. Use
your body weight to transfer the load to the infl ated wing side and
control the turn rate using the brake. The energy of the turn (or roll)
will assist the re-infl ation of the canopy as will «pumping» the brakes
on the defl ated side.
If there is an obstruction on the defl ated side, shift your weight to the
infl ated wing side and prevent the glider changing course with ade-
quate steering input. Infl ate the glider by «pumping» the brake on the
defl ated side.
As a basic principle, it should be noted that steering inputs on the in-
fl ated side must be applied with a thoughtful amount of force to pre-
vent a stall. The side of the wing that remains infl ated creates the lift
required to stabilise the glider.
Remember that the forces involved in collapses in accelerated mode
may prove to be more powerful on account of the higher speeds. Con-
sequently the turning behaviour following an asymmetric collapse is
more dynamic and calls for swift steering responses on the part of
the pilot when counter-braking and re-infl ating.
Incomplete wingovers may provoke a lateral curling of the wing tips
and a possible entanglement of the underside of the wing in a group
of lines. Even minor entanglements can quickly lead to large rota-
tions (turning of the wing) as a result of the heightened resistance.
Avoid a rapid increase in the turning speed by quickly steering in the
opposite direction. Open the entangled wing tip with the aid of the
stabilo line with the orange marking. Keep to the above-described in-
structions in the event of asymmetric collapses and avoid overreac-
tion on the control lines on the infl ated side.
Symmetrical (frontal) collapses
Symmetrical collapses with the EPSILON 5 will reinfl ate without your
input. However a short input with the brakes can speed up the process.
