Speed Performance Indicator (SPI)
As a high-end long-distance paraglider, the OMEGA 7 is designed for
accelerated fl ight in turbulent air. Because today accelerated fl ying
plays a decisive role in performance-oriented paragliding, a high aver-
age speed is the critical factor for success on extended fl ights. It calls
for continuous adjustment of speed depending on the prevailing
headwind, sink rate and anticipated climb in order to obtain best glide
and therefore the shortest fl ight time to cloud base. This is why the
SPI is of particular importance to the OMEGA 7.
Due to an exact calculation of the polar values, fi ve positions with val-
ues for the current headwind , sink rate (both values measured
in unaccelerated fl ight) and the expected rise are provided on the
back of the D-riser. Lining up the sliding red marker on the speed
system with the SPI gives precise settings for the best performance
for the air you are fl ying through. All positions specifi ed on the SPI are
only valid or applicable, respectively, if just one of the three listed
values per position is considered individually or in isolation. The
principle of the SPI is based on the simple and expanded McCready
speed-to-fl y theory.
