8.1 SNMP Overview
8.1.1 General
SNMP needs to support two expectations configuration and maintenance. The SNMP
MIB provides a general description of the available object identifiers. While most
identifiers deliver status information about the system and its components some can be
used to configuration.
In some situation, the product may become out of service or the service not in a normal
state. The product shall have the ability to report the situation to the SMS (System
Management System) or recovered by itself. The SMS can notify the operator(s)
immediately. This mechanism helps to quickly identify the faulty components for
maintenance
8.1.2 BMC & ShMC
The Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) monitors and controls the board
(blade). The Shelf Manager Controller (ShMC) monitors and controls the boards
(blades) and FRUs of a shelf. If any sensor reports a problem the ShMC can take
action or report the problem to a System Manager. This action could be simple like
making the fans to go faster, or more drastic such as telling the BMC to power off the
payload.
8.1.3 SNMP Version
In order to support legacy and new SMS, the Advantech SNMP shall support the
SNMPv1, SNMPv2.
