Sensitivity Area
IF Bandwidth
Sets the bandwidth of the signal filtering, trading
off noise reduction (sensitivity) against measurement speed. A
lower IF bandwidth value means lower noise (high sensitivity)
and a longer measurement time. For swept-mode
measurements, the 86038B chooses a laser sweep speed based
on the IF bandwidth and the wavelength interval, so that the
samples are integrated over most of the interval. Settings of long
intervals and high IF bandwidth may correspond to higher
sweep speeds than achievable. In this case the samples will only
be integrated over a short part of the interval, which may result
in undersampling. Reducing the IF bandwidth can then reduce
noise without resulting in slower sweep rates. Reduce the IF
bandwidth as needed to control trace noise. This is particularly
important when measuring a high insertion loss device.
.
Tips on IF Bandwidth Selection
For higher loss (typically longer)
fibers, improve signal to noise by using a narrower IF
bandwidth. Expect to trade-off measurement speed.
Duty Factor
For swept mode measurements only! As mentioned above, the
laser sweep speed depends on the wavelength interval and IF
Bandwidth parameter settings. Since the speed can only be set
to particular values, some combinations of parameter settings
are able to produce a better match between the integration
interval and the wavelength interval. The estimated ratio of
these two is displayed as the Duty Factor. If this value is low,
such as below 50%, then reducing the IFBW can improve the
duty factor and noise level without increasing the measurement
time. Use this display to optimize the parameters.
Samples/Point
For Stepped mode measurements only!
Determines the number of
amplitude and phase measurements (samples) that are taken at
each measurement wavelength (trace point). If polarization
resolved measurements for DGD/PDL are chosen, then 4 (or 6)
measurements are made for each sample.
