Setting Up the Photonic Dispersion and Loss Analyzer

Unpack your shipment.
• Inspect the shipping containers for damage.
• Inspect the instruments.
• Verify that you received the options and accessories that
you ordered.
Keep the shipping containers and cushioning material until
you have inspected the contents of the shipment form
completeness and have checked the PDLA mechanically and
electrically.
If anything is missing or defective, contact your nearest
Agilent Technologies sales office. If the shipment was
damaged, contact the carrier, then contact the nearest
Agilent Technologies sales office.
Included with the 86038B are two patchcords of about 2 m
length. The MXF Reference Fiber is a special mixed-fiber
device and should be reserved for the verification procedure.
The other reference patchcord is standard single-mode fiber
and should be used for normalization measurements.
2 Install the Tunable Laser Source module into the 8164B
mainframe by sliding the module in from the rear of the
mainframe and tightening the four thumb screws on the rear
panel.
• If more than one 8164B is included, a TLS should be
installed in each one.
Fiber-Optic connectors are easily damaged when connected to dirty
or damaged cables and accessories. When you use improper
cleaning and handling techniques, you risk expensive instrument
repairs, damaged cables, and compromised measurements. Before
you connect any fiber-optic cable to the PDLA, refer to

If the instrument has been shipped with Option #400, for enhanced
loss accuracy, then special protected fibers have been included with
labels for connections to the power meters (PM), and monitor ports.
These fibers can be easily damaged if connected incorrectly. Please
read Step 10 before attaching these fibers.
