7.3 CHECKING ELECTROLYTE LEVEL IN LEAD-

ACID BATTERIES

7.3.1 MANUAL BATTERY FILLING

To ensure correct use and to prevent premature wear of lead-
acid batteries, the electrolyte level (the liquid inside each battery
element) must be checked. This should be done monthly.
If  you  do  not  have  the  automatic  demineralised  water  filling
system for the batteries, the white bayonet cap of each
individual battery cell must be unscrewed to check the level.

The operation must be carried out with the vehicle fully charged,
i.e. with the charger light steady green or the charge indicator
above the steering wheel with all the LEDs lit.
The T1 measurement at which the electrolyte level must be
attested when the batteries are charged is 40 mm. If it is lower,
demineralised water (deionised or distilled) must be added.
If the electrolyte level has fallen below T, i.e. not visible when
the batteries are flat, demineralised water must be added up to
T=51mm. Then fill up to T1=40mm with the batteries charged.

7.3.2 AUTOMATIC BATTERY FILLING VIA

HYDROLINK SYSTEM

If the vehicle is equipped with the
automatic filling system, as shown in the
picture  below,  simply  connect  the  filling
tube and introduce demineralised water.
The following procedure must be carried out:

•   remove the protective cap from the filling connector;
•  immerse  the  filling  pump  tube  (side  without  connector)  in  a

container containing demineralised water.
Squeeze and release the pump so that
the water is introduced into the tube and
removes all air. Beware of water escaping
from the tube, it is, therefore, advisable to
direct it into the container.
•  insert the counterpart into the battery
side charging connector
•  squeeze and release the pump to start
introducing demineralised water into the
batteries. Continue pumping until the
consistency changes and you can no
longer introduce demineralised water into
the charging system.
• disconnect the charging tube and
replace the cap on the battery side
connector.
Be careful when exposing the vehicle to
temperatures below 0°C. The charging
system containing water may freeze and
be damaged. If the vehicle is exposed

to such temperatures, remove the demineralised water in the
system by purging the hoses.
