Additional Control Panels and Switches
Generator Operation Panel (Optional)
The generator control panel is located in the aft cabin bulkhead
above the galley cabinet. The Generator Battery Parallel
switch is next to the control panel. This panel controls the
starting, running, and stopping of the optional generator. The
procedures may vary depending on the model and type of
generator installed in your boat. An owner operator’s manual
for the generator has been supplied with this manual. Please
refer to it for details on the generator operation.
Most generator control panels also include gauges or an
LED screen and warning lights that monitor critical engine
systems.
Note: Diesel and gas generators consume DC electrical
current and charge the battery just enough
to compensate for the DC electrical current
the engine requires to operate. Therefore, it
is important to activate the battery charger
to maintain the boat batteries whenever the
generator is running.
Note: The generator may not be able to operate all
AC accessories at the same time. POWER
MANAGEMENT PRACTICES may need to
be observed depending on the AC power load.
Refer to the AC Line Load Estimator in this
chapter for assistance in determining the load.
GASOLINE VAPORS CAN EXPLODE. bEFORE
STARTING THE GENERATOR, OPERATE THE
bLOWER FOR FIVE (4) MINUTES. OPEN THE
ENGINE ROOM DAY HATCH, INSPECT THE FUEL
SYSTEM AND CHECK THE COMPARTMENT FOR
THE ODOR OF GASOLINE VAPORS. ALWAYS
OPERATE THE bLOWER WHILE THE GENERATOR
IS OPERATING UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES
SHOULD THIS PROCEDURE bE OVERLOOKED.
4.4 Generator (Optional)
The generator is activated by the generator battery and battery
switch. The generator and battery switch are located in the
rear of the engine compartment. There is a removable access
panel on the side of the genset that enables you to check and
service generator components. The generator oil should be
checked whenever you check the oil in the main engines.
There is a separate control panel in the cabin or switches in
the cabin AC panel that activate the generator. The generator
can also be operated from a control panel on the generator.
The circuit breaker that protects the generator DC circuits
is also on this panel. An owner operator’s manual for the
generator has been supplied with this manual. Please refer to
it for details on the generator operation.
The generator engine uses a closed cooling system with a
seawater cooled heat exchanger. There is an expansion tank
for the engine coolant mounted aft of the starboard engine,
near the generator. Make sure the fluid level in the expansion
tank is kept between the maximum and minimum lines of the
tank.
The seawater cooling system operates exactly like the cooling
system on the main engines. It includes a strainer that prevents
debris in the seawater from entering the cooling pump. The
strainer is located on the stringer aft of the port engine. It is
important to check and clean the strainer regularly to ensure
the seawater system can circulate enough water to provide
cooling for the closed cooling and exhaust systems on the
generator. The strainer is visually inspected by looking
through the glass case, for accumulation of marine growth,
weeds, and other foreign objects. If clogged or dirty, the
strainer should be cleaned.
