HISTORY OF THE MICROSCOPE
Around 1650 the manufacturing of glass and lenses made it possible to construct the first microscopes, which were still quite
simple but able to help human beings conduct research. Some of these microscopes could magnify objects up to 300 times (300X is
read three hundred times).

Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch man who was highly
curious, built a simple microscope with which he observed
a drop of pond water, a drop of blood, hair, tissues, crystals,
bacteria, etc... Around 1670, the Englishman Robert Hooke,
observing thin sections of cork, found a number of small
compartments which he called cells (cellula=cells).
It was only in the mid 1800s, with the studies of
Schleiden, Schwann, and Virchow that we began to
understand the meaning of these structures and it was
discovered that all organisms are made of CELLS.
Finally, the first electron microscopes appeared after
1931 and proved to be superior to optical ones. Your video
microscope can be defined as a middle ground between
the light microscope and the electron microscope because
it takes advantage of some aspects of the former and
the latter’s method of visualising an image. The electron
microscope works in a completely different way, using not
light, but a beam of electrons.
