RAID 1n
“RAID n” arrays are arrays that support multiple redundancies. RAID 1n supports a
minimum of three disks and supports a maximum of 16 disks.
RAID 1n, or n-way mirroring; mirrors the data stored in one hard disk drive to several
hard disk drives. This array type provides superior data redundancy because there are
three or more copies of the data. It is also useful for creating exact copies of an array for
backup purposes. However, this array type is expensive, in both performance and the
amount of disk space required to create an array type.
Point Description
uses
Use RAID 1n for small databases or any other environment that requires the best fault tolerance
level but small capacity.
strong points
RAID 1n provides complete data redundancy. RAID 1n is ideal for any application that requires
very strong fault tolerance and minimal capacity. RAID 1n and RAID 10n are great ways to
make backup copies of RAID 1 and RAID 10 arrays. For example, you can
Transform
the array
into an n array and then
Split
the array off and hide the
Split
array from the OS.
weak points
RAID 1n requires at least three times as many hard disk drives. Performance is impaired during
hard disk drive rebuilds.
hard disk drives
Three to 16 hard disk drives.
Note:
RAID 1 over more than two hard disk drives is considered RAID 1n.
