1. Basics
Aqua Medic
Overflow boxes
are specifically designed to skim the surface water layer of your
aquarium. Before following the instructions below, you need to decide where to position the unit.
Normally, it should be placed as far away from the inflow as possible. Also, before starting, you
need to check the capacity of the tank of the filter system below your aquarium. When you initially
start the overflow box, it will drain water from your aquarium to the height of the front edge of the
outflow box. For example, if you place the outflow box 1 cm below the surface, the top cm of water
from your aquarium will initially drain out until the flow stops. If you have a large aquarium, this
might be a lot of water.

3. Installation
1. Screw bulkhead fitting into the hole in the bottom of the overflow box (see Fig. 1).
2. Screw the three adjusting knobs on the overflow box. Connect bulkhead fitting to the outflow
hose or to a fixed outflow piping system.
3. Fix unit in appropriate position on your aquarium and allow water to fill the front chamber
(Fig. 2). With the bottom adjusting knob, you can adjust the unit so that it is parallel to the
tank.
4. Adjust the unit’s height by using the top two adjusting knobs so that the height of the overflow
edge is 5 - 8 mm below the water level. Move safety guard that way that no fish could enter
the overflow box.
5. Fill front chamber with aquarium water (Fig. 3). To start the overflow, draw air out of the
overflow box. This can be done by connecting an air tube to the nipple on top of the unit. The
air can be removed by either connecting the tube with a powerhead pump or by sucking on it
until flow starts (Fig. 4).
4. Ventilation
To ventilate the overflow, there are the following possibilities:
1.
Connect the air tube to the venturi nipple of a powerhead pump (not a circulation pump) in
your aquarium. This is the most safety way.
2.
Suck on air tube until water flows and place the tube’s end into the tank. The tank should be
placed at least 60 cm below aquarium level. This procedure is safe as long as the circulation
pump does not break down.
