ASCO 450/451/452/453 Surge Protective Device (SPD)

Terminals, Wire Size, and
Installation Torque
Branch Circuit Overcurrent
Protection
Terminals are provided for phase (line), neutral, and equipment ground
connections. When equipped with a disconnect switch the 450/451/452/453
terminals accept a range of 6 AWG to1/0 AWG copper wire. For units in-
stalled without a disconnect switch terminals will accept 14 AWG to 2/0 AWG
copper wire
HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION, OR ARC FLASH
• Use conductors rated for the Overcurrent Protection Device (OCPD) per
applicable codes.
• Use conductors rated for the application per applicable codes.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.
UL 1449 Type 1 SPDs have been designed and approved for line side
applications prior to the main service disconnect without supplemental
overcurrent protection.
Type 1 SPDs can also be used in Type 2 applications (load side of OCPD).
When either Type 1 or Type 2 SPDs are used on the load side, they must be
installed per local codes.
Since the current drawn by the SPD device during standby operation is
negligible, the SPD device can be connected to a dedicated, separate
branch circuit or connected to a suitable existing branch circuit.
• When connecting to a separate, dedicated branch circuit, the OCPD
setting must be selected to protect the conductors feeding the SPD
device.
• When connecting to an existing branch circuit, the conductors connected
to the SPD device must have an ampacity not less than the setting of the
existing OCPD. (No larger than 60 A).
During overvoltage surge diversion, current will flow through the SPD device.
The branch circuit OCPD must pass this current without tripping for the SPD
device to function properly.
