Gas Release During Fueling
If gas escapes from the fuel nozzle during
fueling, and no fire condition exists:
1. Close the fuel nozzle valve. If this stops
the flow of escaping gas, then there could
be a problem with the fueling equipment.
Disconnect the fuel nozzle and remount it
to the mounting bracket on the dispenser
or time-fill post, tag the fueling equipment
“Do Not Operate,” and report the situation
to the facility supervisor.
If closing the fuel nozzle valve does not
stop the flow of escaping gas, proceed to
Step 2.
2. Turn the dispenser emergency shut-off
valve to the OFF position. The valve is
located on the side of the dispenser or the
time-fill post and requires a quarter-turn
clockwise to place it in the off position. If
this stops the flow of escaping gas, then
there could be a problem with the fueling
equipment. Disconnect the fuel nozzle
and remount it to the mounting bracket
on the dispenser or time-fill post, tag the
fueling equipment “Do Not Operate,”
and report the situation to the facility
supervisor.
If turning the dispenser emergency shut-
off valve to the OFF position does not
stop the flow of escaping gas, proceed to
Step 3.
3. Close the manual shut-off valves located
on the vehicle fuel tanks to stop the flow
of gas from the vehicle fuel storage tanks.
Disconnect the fuel nozzle and remount it
to the mounting bracket on the dispenser
or time-fill post. Notify the appropriate
persons to diagnose the potential problem
with the vehicle or vehicle fuel storage
tanks.
CNG Vehicle Accidents
CNG fuel tanks are resistant to damage, but
the high pressure lines which connect them
to the vehicle could be vulnerable in a traffic
accident. The risk of ignition is no greater than
for diesel or gasoline fuels, but because of
the high pressure, a fire can spread quickly.
Natural gas is lighter than air and will not
collect in a puddle on the ground, but instead
rise up and dissipate into the air.
Normal vehicle accident procedures should
be followed, with the following special
considerations for CNG powered vehicles:
• Immediately shut off the engine and remove
the key from the ignition.
• Listen for leaks.
• Check for the characteristic odor of natural
gas.
• If safe to do so, turn off all the vehicle fuel
shut-off valves.
• If fuel shut-off is not possible, or if the leak
continues, move everyone away from the
area.
• Contact the proper authorities.
CNG Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers on CNG vehicles should
have a minimum rating of 20B:C and be readily
accessible to the operator. Fire extinguishers
at the fueling facility must be located not
more than 50 feet (15.24 meters) from any
dispenser or compressor skid. The fire
extinguisher should be mounted so that the top
is approximately 44 inches (1.1 meters) above
ground.
Fire Extinguisher Types
According to the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) Guide, natural gas
fires should be extinguished using CO
2
, dry
chemical or Purple K fire extinguishers.
