The high temperature warning limit is
dependent on the engine manufacturer’s
electronic program. With high temperature, the
Check Engine Lamp (Figure 51) will illuminate
and sound an alarm. The engine is at risk of
damage. The engine controller reacts by de-
rating the engine’s power. The engine will lose
power gradually as long as the temperature is
over the activation temperature and will, given
time, decrease output to 50% of full power.
When the temperature has decreased to under
the activation point, the power will gradually
increase to full power again. Stop at the first
safe place where the problem can be checked.
If the high temperature condition continues
the Stop Engine Warning Lamp on the dash
display (Figure 52) will illuminate and the alarm
buzzer will activate for 30 seconds. Safely pull
the truck off of the road and away from traffic.
If the engine electronic control module has
been programmed for engine shutdown,
the engine control module (ECM) will shut
the engine down automatically after the 30
second period. If the shutdown feature is not
programmed in the ECM, use the ignition
switch shut the engine off.
After allowing the engine to cool, an engine
restart can be attempted. The engine electronic
control module will determine whether to
allow a restart, based on whether or not the
engine temperature has returned to the normal
operating range.
Do not attempt to drive the vehicle or run the
engine until a qualified service technician can
diagnose the problem.
Note: The Stop Engine Warning Lamp
remains on even when the temperature
returns to normal. The ignition key switch
must be turned off and then on again to
clear the warning mode.
DANGER
Failure to take necessary action when the
Stop Engine Warning Lamp is illuminated
can result in automatic engine shutdown
and loss of power steering assist.
Vehicle crash can occur, causing serious
personal injury or death.
NOTICE
Failure to observe correct precautions
when the Stop Engine Warning Lamp
lights up solidly could result in serious
damage to the engine and/or other
components.
Fuel Gauge
NOTICE
This information does not apply to trucks
equipped with gaseous fuel engines
(CNG/LNG). The fuel level gauge on CNG/
LNG trucks is supplied by the upfitter and
does not utilize Autocar components.
The fuel gauge (diesel engines only)
(Figure 54 off-road or Figure 55 on-road
engines) is connected to a sending unit in the
fuel tank via the gateway module located on
the frame rail near the transmission.
