FIFTH WHEEL
The fifth wheel (Figure 126) couples the
trailer’s kingpin to the tractor and supports the
trailer’s forward weight. The fifth wheel latches
automatically when the trailer’s kingpin is slid
into the full latch position. The king pin latch is
released (unlatched) using a cab-mounted air
control switch, and if required, the manual latch
release located at the fifth wheel.
The fifth wheel hydraulic boom lift allows the
operator to move (spot) trailers while remaining
in the cab or having to manually operate the
trailer landing gear. Trailers can be raised and
coupled then moved to their destination and
lowered to the ground, and uncoupled using
the hydraulic boom and air controls.

Fifth Wheel boom Operation
The fifth wheel boom cylinders are hydraulically
actuated to raise and lower the boom and fifth
wheel. A hydraulic pump is driven by the engine
to supply the hydraulic fluid pressure needed for
operation.
WARNING
Rollover Hazard. Do not raise or lower the
boom while the tractor is moving.
The fifth wheel boom control lever
(Figure 127, Item [1]) is located in the cab on
the right-hand console. Operation of the boom
requires the tractor to be in NEUTRAL, with
engine running.
NOTICE
Rate of boom travel corresponds to
engine speed in NEUTRAL.

Raising
Pull the control lever down.
NOTICE
The boom has approximately 16” (40.6
cm) of lift. beware of surroundings. Care
should be taken to ensure the trailer does
not contact low hanging obstacles.
Lowering
Push the control lever up.
