Key Catalog Terms
Use this table to become familiar with the key terms related to part catalogs and the Catalog Editor.
Definition
Term
Defines an Autodesk product catalog used in AutoCAD MEP, along with a folder
hierarchy that includes each part’s definition files (DWG, BMP, and XML files).
APC file
A part definition file that stores the preview bitmap image of the part; used to
help identify the part during part selection.
BMP file
A part defined by the associated files (DWG, XML, and BMP files) that store the
part data.
catalog part
A group of related chapters or part families that makes up a part catalog structure.
chapter
A specific type of part data that is defined once in a part family and shared by all
part sizes, such as domain, type, and subtype.
common parameter
A unique, user-defined part parameter. Custom data can be constant for a part
family or different for each part size.
custom data
A part definition file that stores model geometry, which defines the appearance
and enables the display of the part.
DWG file
A specific type of part data that can have one or more values.
parameter
A collection of parts typically organized into chapter folders that group related
parts. The hierarchy of a part catalog is user-definable.
part catalog
A collection of parameters whose values define a part; part data is stored in an
XML file.
part data
A collection of related part sizes.
part family
The part data for the XML file that is compiled into a single table of part sizes,
enabling easy navigation of part sizes during part selection.
part size table
A unique part defined by a set of specific parameters, or part data.
part size
1. A part family when referenced in Catalog Editor or with regard to content. 2.
A specific part size when referenced in AutoCAD MEP.
part
A specific type of part data used to define one or more part sizes, depending on
how the size parameter is stored in the part family.
size parameter
A collection of related parameters with unique characteristics that determine how
the part data defines the part. There are 4 storage types: basic table, constant
lists, constants, and calculations.
storage type
A part definition file that stores the data for a part family, including the common
and size parameters. The part data is stored using extensible mark-up language
(XML).
