Over-voltage and sneak-current protection
Over-voltage and sneak-current protection measures are necessary for the safe operation of
the Avaya TGM550 and TIMs. Out-of-building installations of telephones or other terminal
devices that connect to the Avaya Media Modules require over-voltage and sneak current
protection in both buildings. The following devices have been evaluated or tested and approved
to protect the Media Modules from over-voltages and sneak current protection:
●
Avaya TIM510 T1 / E1 Media Module. Over-voltage and sneak current protection are
provided on the Media Modules themselves.
●
Avaya TGM550, TIM508, TIM514, TIM516, and TIM518 Analog Media Modules:
Over-voltage and sneak current protection for these interfaces is provided on the Media
Modules’ interfaces. Incoming trunks normally have over-voltage protection provided by
the local telephone company. Analog voice terminals use one of the following types of
combined over-voltage and sneak current protection at the building entry point:
- Gas tube with heat coil. 4B1E-W
- Solid state with heat coil. 4C1S
- IROB. 146C (4-lines) or 146F (25-lines)
●
Avaya TIM521 ISDN-BRI Media Module: over-voltage and sneak current protection are
provided on the Media Modules. Network-side (PSTN) applications require an NT-1
device. Tie trunk applications and connections to digital terminals require either the 146E
IROB (In-Range Out-of-Building) or 4C3S-75 solid state protectors.

CAUTION:
CAUTION:
The J-series router must be turned off before inserting or removing the Avaya
TGM550 and TIM modules. These modules are not hot-swappable. If you
attempt to remove or insert these modules while the router is turned on, the
router might reset or malfunction in some other way.
1. Have ready a length of the type of cable the interface uses, as specified in
C: Network cable specifications and pinouts
on page 181. Possible connections are:
