Tightening the Bolts
The single most important thing you can do to extend the life of your loom,
and preserve its operation, is tighten the bolts that hold its frame together.
These will loosen over time, due to changes in its environment and to your
own creative exertions.
Lubrication and Cleaning
There are several mechanisms on your loom which will benefit from the
occasional light application of an appropriate lubricant. Everything has been
lubricated before leaving the factory; however they will require new
applications of lubricant at regular intervals. In general, parts should be
lubricated after 160 hours of weaving. Since this will vary depending on the
weaver, consider putting a note on your calendar at the approximate date
when you will have completed that much weaving.
Not all lubricants are suitable in the weaving environment. Machine oils and
greases, for example, can capture yarn dust and will, over time, actually
impede the action of your loom. Some of the parts on your loom require a
dry film lubricant, such as RZ-50. This comes in a spray can which will allow
you to direct the lubricant to a specific area. A few parts require the use of
clear synthetic grease such as Tri-Flow Clear Synthetic Grease (TF23004).
Pay attention to the directions below regarding which lubricant to use and
where to direct it.
Dobby Bearing Slides
There are two sections on the Dobby that will require dry film lubrication:
the bearing slides and the thrust bearings at the end of each arm. This
should be done after every 160 hours of weaving. The harnesses should lift
smoothly and quietly if lubrication is applied regularly. If there are squeaks
or grinding noises coming from the Dobby, lubricate these parts.
Note:
The following pictures have had some of the cables and electronics on the
Dobby removed in order to focus on the parts that need lubrication. When
lubricating your Dobby, do not remove anything, just reach under the cables
and electronics to reach the parts shown in these pictures.
