Section 10 Using an External SCSI-to-SCSI
RAID Controller
The AXIS StorPoint NAS is delivered with the capability to perform
mirroring (RAID-1).
To use other levels of RAID with the StorPoint NAS solution, such as
RAID-5, it is possible to use an external SCSI-to-SCSI RAID controller.
A RAID controller can for example be mounted just underneath the
StorPoint NAS in an enclosure and be connected between the StorPoint
NAS and the hard disks.
If this is the case the StorPoint NAS will see (and mount) the volumes
on the hard disks as they have been specified in the set-up of the RAID
controller.
It is not possible to set up the RAID controller through the Web
administration interface of the StorPoint NAS. The RAID controller
set-up has to be performed through the panel display (if available) of the
RAID controller or through another interface, for example a terminal
set-up.
To install a SCSI-to-SCSI RAID controller with the StorPoint NAS,
follow these steps:
1. Physically connect the StorPoint NAS, RAID controller, and hard
disks as described in the RAID controller documentation. In that
description the StorPoint NAS corresponds to the SCSI host
controller.
2. Follow the RAID controller documentation to create the RAID
volumes and specify the desired level of RAID.
3. When the RAID controller has been set-up and is ready to use, go to
the Web administration interface of the StorPoint NAS. Restart the
StorPoint NAS by clicking the
Restart Server
button.
4. Wait for the StorPoint NAS to restart.
5. Go to the Web administration interface of the StorPoint NAS and
perform a Format, see “
6. The StorPoint NAS, the connected RAID controller and hard disks
are now ready for use.
