9. Appendix I: Checklists
9.1. Checklist: Fire in the engine
• Stop the engine.
• Steer the boat up against the wind, if possible.
• Make sure all passengers have life jackets.
• If necessary:
◦ Evacuate the passengers.
◦ Call for sea rescue.
• Shut off fuel and main power switches.
• Extinguish the fire.
• Wait until fully certain that the fire has been extinguished before opening the engine cover.
Carefully open the engine cover and be prepared to use the handheld fire extinguisher if
necessary for post-fire extinguishing.
• Put out possible smoldering fires with water.
9.2. Checklist: After fire
• Open doors and windows for better ventilation.
• Inspect the boat and its equipment, and repair eventual damages.
• Contact local authorities, if needed.
• Make sure that the fire extinguishing equipment is refilled or replaced after use.
9.3. Checklist: Regular inspection before leaving harbor
Safety
Make sure that:
• All the people onboard have life jackets.
• The wind and wave conditions do not exceed the design category of the boat.
• The dead man's switch is switched to driver.
• There is fire extinguisher(s) onboard and their approval/inspection date has not expired.
• The needed ropes and anchor are onboard.
Draining and tightness
Check that:
• There is no water in the bilge.
• All the bilge pumps are functional.
• The bilge has no signs of fuel or oil leaks.
