PREPARATION OF ICEPACKS
· Fill the icepacks with cold, clean water according to the figure
below. The ice pack must be filled in an upright position. The
fill level must not exceed the indicated level. The remaining
air space allows the expansion of volume of the water that oc-
curs during the transition from liquid into a solid physical
state.
· Prior to freezing, the tightness of the ice pack must be
checked by applying strong pressure simultaneously to both
sides. Neither water nor air must be released. If an ice pack
has a leak, it must not be used and exchanged against a new, original one. Do not use icepack with a
different construction or made by an other manufacturer !
· Standard freezers (and household appliances) can be used to freeze the icepacks. The freezing tempera-
ture must be at least -20°C. B medical systems recommends the use of an icepack-freezer, which has
been specially designed for this purpose.
USING THE ICEPACKS WITH BLOOD COMPONENTS
· For transport of temperature sensitive blood components, do not use the deep frozen icepacks. Take the
icepacks out of the freezer and allow them to thaw prior to use. The ready-for-use icepack must have a
temperature of about 0°C. The easiest way to check this, is the “finger-pressure-test”: After staying at
room temperature (25°C) for about 30 minutes, the ice starts melting and bubbles occure below the
upper surface when pressing the icepack with the finger. With lower ambient temperatures the time of
the ice starting to melt will increase up to
1 hour.
· Load the icepacks and blood bags in accordance to the packing instruction of the box.
· Always store the blood bags the provided containers in such a way to avoid direct contact with the
icepacks.
· When packing or unpacking the box, do not leave the lid open for unnecessary long time.
CLEANING and MAINTENANCE
· A visual inspection of the transport container should be done after every use or after every shift. Open
the container and remove the icepacks. All parts of the transport box must be completely dried.
· Check the icepacks for deformations and tightness. Refreeze the icepacks as described above.
· The following points of the transport containers are now inspected, according to the following criteria :
(different equipment depending on model)
- Check the lid and the body for damages in the form of buckling, dents, tears and missing or broken
parts.
- Check the hinges of the lid and the related screws with regard to condition and function.
- Check the catches of the lid and the related screws with regard to condition, function and secure
position.
- Check the Silicon seal between the lid and the body for damage, elasticity and secure position.
· Following the visual inspection, the surface of entire box, including all replacement parts, should be
cleaned with a standard disinfectant in accordance with the operating instructions of the manufacturer
of the disinfectant or the company’s own hygiene plan.
