How Your Acclaim Operates
Sometimes called an overlock machine or overlocker, the serger is different from any conventional
s ew ing m ac h ine you h av e us ed . A w arenes s of it s s im ple operat ion w ill enab le you t o b ec om e m ore
proficient in its use. Please read all instructions before using your new machine.
Serging is kind of a knitting process that loops two, three or four threads together to create a stitch.
Your Baby Lock Acclaim operates with one or two needles and one or two « loopers , » eac h
c arrying a t h read t o f orm t h e ov erloc k s t it c h .
When fabric is placed into the machine, it reaches the feed dogs first. The feed dogs move the
fabric along as the cutting blades trim the edge, creating a clean edge to be finished. Then the
loopers and need le( s ) f orm t h e s t it c h on t h e f ab ric ed g e, s upport ed b y one or m ore parallel
«stitch fingers» - metal prongs that keep the fabric flat. The threads become «locked» over the
f ab ric and t h e res ult ing s t it c h es enc as e t h e raw ed g e w it h t h read t o prev ent f ab ric rav eling .
After setting up your machine for the first time, take a few moments to learn how it sews. Before
your s erg er is t h read ed , t urn t h e h and w h eel c ount erc loc k w is e and w at c h t h e m ov em ent and
operation of the various parts. Don’t bother with fabric at first. It doesn’t hurt your serger to stitch
w it h out f ab ric und er t h e pres s er f oot .
