The stern drve can be damaged by mpact, ether
whle tralerng or boatng. To mnmze the possblty
of mpact damage whle tralerng, keep the stern
drve rased to the tralerng poston.
The hydraulc system used to rase and lower the
stern drve can cushon mpact and lessen damage
from head-on mpacts to the stern drve from
underwater objects BUT Only when the boat s
movng forward. There s no protecton f the stern
drve s struck durng reverse operaton or from an
angle when movng forward.
If you strke a submerged object, sTOP ThE
EngInE as soon as possble and examne the
stern drve unt for damage. Even f no damage s
visible, there could be internal problems or difficulty
maneuverng. If you must use the boat after mpact,
run at the lowest speed possble.

a. shut off engne, remove key, shft nto neutral
and put tape over gnton swtch key slot.
b. straghten the bent tabs on the propeller nut
retaner (Fgure 4.3.1).
c. Place a block of wood between the gear case
and propeller to stop propeller from rotatng and
remove propeller nut (Fgure 4.3.2).
d. Remove the propeller nut retaner, the thrust hub
and the contnuty washer (Fgure 4.3.3) and
put them n a secure place. Pull the propeller
straght off the shaft. Remove the thrust washer
that s behnd the propeller. If the propeller s
sezed to the shaft and cannot be removed
by hand, specal tools are needed. have the
propeller removed by an authorzed dealer or
traned mechanc.
e. Coat the propeller shaft wth an ant-seze
lubrcant (Fgure 4.3.4).

If engine is started during propeller maintenance,
serious personal injury can occur.
