TURNTABLE BEARING- ML
(continued...)
CAUTION
!
LUBRICATION
(continued...)
PROCEDURE
Ÿ
Rotate the machine slightly between each shot of grease for complete distribution of the
grease throughout the bearing.
Ÿ
Three shots of grease per fitting should be sufficient.
Ÿ
Rotate the machine at least two complete revolutions for each fitting.
Use caution when using
pneumatic or electric grease
guns.
Excessive grease
pressure may damage the
bearing seal.
SIGNS OF A WORN-OUT BEARING
A bearing that is wearing out will begin to show pitting in the contact area of the raceway.
At this state, the bearing is still functionally acceptable, since the initial number of pittings is very
small and usually multiplies at a low rate. Eventually the number of pittings increases to a
density where material particles are spalled out of the raceway and the bearing finally becomes
non-functional, worn out. The following signs will show up if a bearing is pitting or spalling:
Ÿ
metal pieces or shavings in the grease
Ÿ
operation changes from smooth to rough
Ÿ
an increase in necessary drive power
Ÿ
an increase in noise
INSPECTION
SEALS
Ÿ
a steady increase of bearing clearance which accelerates towards the end of the bearing
life (see Bearing Clearance later in this section)
NOISE, ROUGHNESS AND VIBRATION
Continued monitoring of equipment noise, roughness, and vibration during operation can assist
in early detection of poor or unsafe components, structural failure, or poor bearing performance.
The operator should be very familiar with the typical operating conditions generated by the
equipment. Investigate and resolve any noted changes.
Ÿ
Seals should be inspected every 3-6 months during routine maintenance.
Ÿ
Check for tears, breaks, or other signs of damage. Depending on the lubrication frequency
and protection, it may be necessary to clean some areas to conduct this inspection.
Ÿ
There should be a small bead of grease around the seal edge indicating the bearing is
receiving sufficient lubrication.
CLEANING
Ÿ
Cleaning should be done with material compatible with seals following all manufacturers'
instructions for use, storage, and disposal.
Ÿ
Do not expose the seal area or any other bearing opening to pressurized cleaning.
