Chapter 6: General Procedures
HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
—Manages Web pages that are being
requested, and transports them to the appropriate computer.
Internet Protocol (IP) Address
—A unique number that identifies a device on a
network.
Link
—Shown as an underlined word on a Web page. Click on it to go to its Web
page.
Local Area Network (LAN)—
A facility’s network.
NetBios Name Service
—A local method of addressing a device by name in
addition to IP address. This allows an Internet browser to reference a device by a
name, such as “Master123456”, instead of an IP address, such as 192.168.2.3;
which a user often does not know. Devices on the other side of a router will not
be located. A DNS provides this function on a WAN, such as the Internet.
Nullmodem.inf
—Device file that is similar to a device file that manufacturers
provide for real modems (see “NULL Modem Driver Setup Instructions for
Windows® Operating System” on page 6–20). It is also available under the name
“nullmodem.inf,” at various Internet sites.
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)—
PPP transmits TCP/IP data over a serial cable
or modem.
Pull-down Menu
—List hidden in a window until you click on the arrow beside
the first item in the list.
RS-232
—Serial communication port and cable.
Server
—A computer on a network that provides information or services on
demand.
TCP/IP—
A protocol used by the Internet to route and transmit information, such
as files and web pages, between computers.
UDP
—User Datagram Protocol is used by the devices on a network to advertise
themselves, and to discover other devices on the network.
Web Page—
Page of information obtained from a computer network.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
—The Internet.
Window
—Divided areas on a PC display that are broken down into different
types of information.
