Ethernet Details
Physical Connection
Each device connects to an Ethernet switch or hub with Cat-5 Ethernet Cable
(10BaseT).
It is best to use a switch because the devices only communicate at 10 megabits. A
switch also improves the facility\qs network performance and keeps unnecessary
traffic from being routed to the alarm.
Addressing on a Managed Network
If connected to a managed network, the MedPlus TotalAlert® Alarm Network
starts communicating automatically. Upon power-up, the alarm may behave as
follows:
1. Each device spends up to one minute looking for an address server, a DHCP.
If the server is found, the device accepts an IP address from the server.
2. If a DHCP server is not found after one minute, the device enters AUTOIP™
mode. Each device tries random IP addresses in the private address range of
169.254.x.x, until it finds an unused one.
Addressing on an Un-Managed Network
If connected to an un-managed, stand-alone network that has only MedPlus
TotalAlert® Alarm Network devices on it, the alarm may behave as follows:
1. The device continues to check for a DHCP server every two minutes, waiting
for a server to come on-line.
2. If a server comes on-line, the alarm discards the AUTOIP™ address and uses
the address given to it by the DHCP.
A typical un-managed alarm network includes the following (see figure 6-6 on
page 6–14):
• Ethernet cable (A)
• Master Alarms (B)
• Area Alarms (C)
• Switch or hub (D)
• Computer system (E)
