Section 2 INSTALLATION
2.1 General remarks
The installation of the portable VHF station depends on the type of vehicle and equipment design. It is
therefore only possible to provide general guidelines in this section.
2.2 Pre-installation check
Prior to installing the portable VHF station in an vehicle, it should be inspected to determine whether
any damage has been caused during transport.
2.2.1 Visual inspection
Before placing in operation, a visual inspection should be carried out and the following defects checked
for:
1. Soiling, dents, scratches, rust, broken fasteners, chipped paint coat on housing or housing parts.
2. Soiling or scratches on type plates, front plates, LCDs or lettering.
3. Soiling, bent or cracked pins, cracked connectors or jack enclosures.
4. Soiled, sticking or damaged pushbuttons, knobs or dials.
2.2.2 Mechanical installation in a vehicle
Attachment is by means of the unit mounting bracket. This is to e secured to a suitable point using three
bolts. When choosing the installation point ensure that the controls and indicators are readily accessi-
ble. The dimensions are shown in Fig 2-4.
2.3 Installation wiring
2.3.1 General
The following general precautions are to be observed.
1. All electrical systems in the vehicle shall be suppressed, grounded and screened.
2. No other leads should be included in the supply lead loom (d.c. voltage supply).
3. All external cable terminations to the equipment shall be marked.
4. The external cable harness shall not be too short, it must be able to move freely and thus prevent
fracture of the wires. The cable harness should also be laid in such a manner that the individual ca-
bles are not abraded on the cabinet or chassis.
5. Twisted, screened cables should be used for symmetrical connections, to minimise interference
from electrical and magnetic fields.
