Longer game version
The game proceeds as in the versions already described. In this longer version, instead of missing out
the fields where only outlines are left, they are counted in. In this version, whenever a player lands on a
“Cup” field where only the outline is left, he can take a tile which belongs to his hobby.
Tip for experienced players
Older children can play the game without using the template cards or self-monitoring. This means that all
the children in the group have to pay close attention. In case of doubt they can consult each other about
the motifs. This strengthens communication and group cohesion.
Tips for kindergarten teachers
Assigning objects (Age:3+)
Spread out all the motif tiles. Beginning with one side of the board, let the children find
the motif tiles which correspond to the outlines of the objects printed on the board. The
children have to observe very carefully; they train their matching ability and their fine
motor skills.
Morning circle (Age: 4+):
Hobbies are great fun and they offer an opportunity to try out various different interests.
Thus they occupy an important position in children’s development. Let the children bring to
kindergarten a piece of equipment which they need for their hobby. Then let them present
what they have brought, one by one. Which hobby do they have, and what do they need
the equipment for? This supports the children’s communication with one another and
gives them self-confidence.
Wall newspaper (Age: 4+):
Together with the children, look for pictures of their hobbies in magazines. Cut these out
and make a wall newspaper. The children can also decorate the wall newspaper with their
own paintings.
Memory game version 1 (Age:4+):
Make two copies of the motifs illustrated in the attached leaflet. Cut them out the motifs,
laminate the cards – and you have an instant memory game with 33 pairs.
Memory game version 2 (Age:4+):
All the motif tiles from the game are placed on the table, with the motif face down. Each
player chooses one side of the game board, and has to find the motifs which belong on his
side of the board. Players take turns in a clockwise direction.
Tips for parents
Hobbies are very important for children, to try out different interests and develop their capabilities. It is
especially important that your child should enjoy his or her free time occupations – because if children
choose their hobbies themselves, they will have the most fun and invest a lot of time of their own accord.
Limit hobbies to one or two activities at most. And children should not spend more than one or two after-
noons on them, otherwise it will soon become too much for them, and they will lose their enthusiasm.
We would advise you to follow the motto: “less is more”!
