4.2.4. DIODES
The conventonal diode consists of two blocks of semiconductor
material, a N-type doped with negatve ions (-), and a P-type doped with
positve ions (+).
As main characteristc, the diode allows the electric current to fow only
in one directon (lef to right as shown in the picture).
To indicate the polarity, the diode has a mark that points to the
corresponding edge of the cathode. The electric current fows from the
anode (+) to the cathode (-) and not in reverse.
The Zener diode difers from the conventonal diodes in being able to
drive in both directons (direct and reverse), in controlled situatons,
without damaging itself. The Zener diode has an associated reverse
voltage that remains constant in a situaton where the current fows in
the opposite directon. This allows it to be used in Bot'n Roll ONE A as a
protecton element in the battery measurement circuit. It works as a
voltage limiter. To its terminals, voltage never rises above 5.1 V and thus
the PIC18F45K22 will never be damaged in case the battery accidentally
has excessively high voltages.
The board uses two diferent diodes with references:
FR203, used to drive the motors and to protect the power
circuit of the robot.
Zener 5v1, used as a protecton element in the battery
measurement circuit.
The diodes have polarity, and therefore, must be placed with
the correct orientaton! Each diode has a mark that must match
with the mark represented on the serigraphy of the printed
circuit board (Fig. 26: Diodes locaton).
The diode reference is printed on the component itself.
Place the Zener diode 5V1 on
Z1.
Place the FR203 diode on positons:
