Tests have shown that the reaction time for braking by hand is a lot shorted than when brak-
ing using the feet. If a driver has reduced functionality in their legs or feet, it may therefore be
a good idea to recommend using controls instead of pedals.
A reaction test performed on 100 individuals between the ages of 20 and 60 shows that /
- the average for a 6-point reaction test is between 0.42 and 1.62 seconds.
- the average for an emergency brake test is between /
0.313 and 0.595 seconds with pedals
0.290 and 0.595 seconds with the left hand
0.239 and 0.549 seconds with the right hand
Steering wheel
The strength needed to steer a vehicle varies due to a number of factors, including car
model, tyre pressure and road surface. If the vehicle is standing on a dry, level surface, a force
of between 2.0 and
4.5 kg is needed on average to turn the wheel. Some car models have
what is known as progressive power steering, which makes the vehicle easy to steer at low
speeds. If, in spite of progressive power steering, the driver would still not be able to steer
the vehicle, a joystick or mini steering wheel may be an alternative.
Controls
When installing a control for acceleration and braking, it is important that transfer of force
to the control should be as accurate as possible. Of course, the brake function is by far the
most important. In this type of adaptation it is recommended that the car’s primary electrical
functions be integrated in the controls. As a driver, when cornering, for instance, you have
to be able to switch on the windscreen wipers or signal with indicators at the same time as
accelerating or braking. If only one hand is used for acceleration and braking, the driver may
need an armrest to counteract static loads on their arm. A wheel spinner is also recommend-
ed to make the steering easier.
Pedals
The force needed to brake a vehicle varies due to a number of factors, including car model
and brake condition. For sharp braking, a force of between 2.0 and 3.0 kg is needed on
average to depress the pedal. It is important to emphasise that the ability to brake also
involves some movement capability, as you have to be able to move your foot quickly
between the various pedals.
