A-8 IRAS-24A T1/ISDN Modem Card Installation and Reference Guide
Channel
Service Unit
(CSU)
To connect the IRAS-24A card to a T1 line, FCC regulations
require a Channel Service Unit (CSU) be connected into the
T1 interface port.
The CSU performs two main functions:
❐
Conditions the digital signals for transmission
through the network.
❐
Protects the line from over-voltage conditions.
CSUs vary in price and features. They may be purchased
from computer stores and mail-order companies that offer
such equipment. Some service providers sell or lease their
own CSUs, and they may require you to use their equipment.
Contact your service provider to determine any special
requirements or restrictions before you purchase a CSU.
You should purchase a CSU with an internal backup battery
or plug the CSU into an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
Battery backup ensures that the CSU continues to exchange
signals with the CO even if your site loses power.
