My machine is
connected but it does
not feed my document
or do anything else.
Your document is placed incorrectly.
Insert your document until you feel the top edge of
the document touch the inside of your machine.
Your document is too thin or too thick.
Check that your document is acceptable
(see
If your document is acceptable:
1. Confirm that the USB cable connecting your
machine to your computer is connected correctly.
2. Reinstall the scanner driver from the Brother
installation DVD.
Paper dust has accumulated on the
surface of the rollers.
Clean the rollers.

Too many documents are loaded in the
ADF at a time.
Make sure your document is acceptable for the
machine. See
There are foreign objects in the ADF.
Remove any foreign objects or ripped paper from
the ADF.
A multifeed occurs.
Paper dust has accumulated on the
surface of the rollers.
Clean the rollers.

Too many documents are loaded in the
ADF at a time.
Load no more than 100 pages at a time.

The document is sticky or has a sticky
note on it, which caused a multi-feed.
Use the Carrier Sheet to scan the multifed
document.
The document is
jammed.
Causes may vary.
Open the machine’s top cover and gently pull out
the document. Make sure no paper remains in the
machine.
Your document is not acceptable for the
machine (for example, if the paper is
too long).
Make sure your document is suitable for the
machine (see

Paper dust has accumulated on the

My machine gets
warm.
It is normal for your machine to emit a
small amount of heat after prolonged
use.
If there is a strange smell coming from the machine
or the machine feels hot to the touch, immediately
remove the power cord and USB cable from your
machine. Contact Brother customer service or your
local Brother dealer. See
The scan quality is
poor.
Paper dust has accumulated inside
