Optical SFP modules for fibre
connectivity can be used for console
to processing core, router to router,
and router to I/O connections.
Fibreconnectivityisrequiredwhenthe
cablerunbetweenunitsexceedsthe90m
maximumpermissiblelengthforCat5e/
Cat6coppercabling.Fibrecanalsobe
usedforshorterrunsifitissimplythe
preferredmedium.

buttheymayalsohavefibreconnectors

SinglemodevsMultimode
ThecorewithinMultimodefibreis
relativelythickwhencomparedto
Singlemode.Lighttravelsthrough
Multimodefibreatmultipleangles,
‘bouncing’offthesidesofthecoreasit
travels,takingmultiplepathsor‘modes’of
varyinglengthfromoneendtotheother,
resultinginpulsesbeinglengthenedas
theytravel.Singlemodefibrehasavery
finecoreandlighttravelsinasingle,direct
pathfromoneendtotheotherwithout
affectingpulselength.Theresultisthat
Singlemodefibrehasahigherbandwidth
capacityand,importantly,lowsignal
lossallowingmuchgreaterdistancesto
beachieved.Lightcanbetransmitted
intoMultimodefibreusingLEDsor
lowpoweredlaserswhilstSinglemode
requiresahigherpoweredlaser.
CalrecrecommendtheuseofSinglemode
fibrewheneverpossibleinorderto
maximisetheflexibilityinthelocationof
hardwareandmaintainuniformityacross
thesystembyusingasingletype.Ifa
Multimodeinfrastructureisinplace,fibre
length,thenumberofinter-connects
andequipmentlocationbecomemore
important.
SFPmodulesareavailableforboth
SinglemodeandMultimodefibretypes.
Itisimportanttoselectthecorrect
SFPforthetypeoffibrebeingusedin
theinstallation.Ifusingamixtureof
SinglemodeandMultimodefibre,itis
importanttoensurethecorrectSFPsare
matchedtothecorrectfibretype.
Identification
Thereleasebutton/handlesoffibreSFPs
arecolourcoded-blueforSinglemode,
blackforMultimode.BlueLCconnectors,
asshownhere,shouldbeusedto
terminateSinglemodefibreandbeige
colouredconnectorsforMultimode.
DuplexConnectors/Terminations
StandardCalrecfibreSFPs,both
MultimodeandSinglemode,useduplex
LCconnectors.
Theduplexterminationrequirestwofibres
perconnection,oneisasendpath,the
otherisareceivepath.Whenterminating
thefibre,thesendfromoneendshould
connecttothereceiveoftheotherand
thereforethey‘cross-over’,terminatedAto
BandBtoA.
SingleStrand,Bi-DirectionalSFPs
Toreducetheamountoffibre,Calrec
cansupplySinglemodeSFPsthatsend
andreceiveoverasingle,orsimplexLC
connector.Inordertobeabletopass
datainbothdirectionsoverasingle
strand,thelighttravellinginonedirection
needstobeofadifferentwavelengthto
thelighttravellingintheotherdirection.
Therefore,bi-directionalSFPscomeas
eithertypeAortypeB(asindicated
byanAorBattheendofthemodel
number)andtheyneedtobepairedup;
afibreshouldconnectbetweenatype
AandatypeB,andnotbetweentwo
Bi-DirectionalSFPsofthesametype/
wavelength.Theunitsarecolourcoded
toaididentificationbetweenAtypes&B
types.
SFPFibreSpecifications
Specificationsareshowninthetable
totheright.Themaximumdistances
shownhereassumeasinglepoint-to-
pointconnectionwithnointermediary
interconnections.Lossesshouldbe
measuredacrossthetotalsignalpath
includinginterconnectsbetweenpointsof
SFPtransceiverconnection.Lossesneed
tobelessthantheopticalpowerbudget
oftheSFPtransceiversbeingused.
