Edge Deck Fastening System Installation Instructions – CAMO Marksman Pro Series (Pro, Pro-X1, Pro-X2, and Pro-NB)
The CAMO Edge Deck Fastening System is easy to use for installing
treated wood, hardwood, cedar, composite, or pvc deck boards.
The following instructions will share the simple installation process
to create a beautiful, fastener-free deck surface using the CAMO
Marksman Pro series tools. It is important to note that this is a
system - CAMO Edge Fasteners, CAMO Marksman
®
Pro series tools
and CAMO driver bits are engineered to work exclusively together.
Using other branded tools or guides, fasteners or bits will impair
performance and not produce the desired results.
Before beginning installation of your deck, you will need the following:

CAMO Edge Fasteners
•
CAMO driver bit (included with CAMO Edge Fasteners)
•
for installing grooved decking please use the CAMO
“grooved board” bit (item #0345089) sold separately
•
CAMO Marksman Pro series guide
•
Drill (set drill speed to the highest setting for best
performance)
Optional: galvanized L brackets or CAMO Exterior Screws (for the
board that abuts the structure)
CAMO Marksman Pro Schematic
It is important to be familiar with the marksman pro. This tool is used
to guide CAMO Edge Fasteners into the side of the deck board and
down into the joist. It can be used on any 5-1/4”- 5-3/4” wide solid or
grooved deck board. No pre-drilling is necessary*, and the marksman
pro series tools provide automatic spacing between deck boards.
Adjusting the Tool:
The CAMO Marksman Pro series tools come with a (middle) factory
setting of 5-1/2” which fits most standard size deck boards. You can
adjust the width of the tool spacers from 5-1/4” to 5-3/4” to fit the
boards you are using if necessary. Loosen the Thumb Dial at the rear
of the tool to adjust the Spacer to fit the width of your deck boards.
Once you have achieved a snug fit on the board, tighten the thumb
screw to hold the position.
*Pre-Drill Option:
The CAMO EDGE Deck Fastening System does not
require pre-drilling; however, when using CAMO EDGE screws with
capped composite decking
or stainless steel CAMO EDGE screws
with
hardwood
decking such as IPE, Cumaru, Tigerwood, Ironwood,
or similar deck products, we recommend pre-drilling. Please use the
CAMO Pre-drill bit (item# 0345035) or you may set up your own
pre-drill bit using the following instructions.
1.
Use a 3/16” drill bit chucked at 2-3/8” from the
tip of the bit to the drill chuck as shown below:

Place the Marksman Pro in the correct fastening position on
the deck board over the joist.
3.
Using the Marksman Pro as a guide
, pre-drill both sides of
the deck board.
4.
Leaving the Marksman Pro in place, insert CAMO
EDGE Fasteners in the Screw Guides and fasten.

Butt Joints:
Always add an additional piece of 2x4 or 2x6 joist
member at all butt joint locations to allow for the 1” setback
requirement at the board ends. (See fastening requirements)
45° Angle Installations:
Position the Marksman Pro over the edge
of the high side of the joist so that the fastener remains completely
in the joist when fully driven. You may find marking the deck board
where it intersects the joist useful. To do this, draw a line where they
intersect and position the Marksman Pro so the middle of the Screw
Guide rests over the line. Proceed to drive the screw per above
instructions. Repeat this process down the length of the deck board
on both edges.

Fastening Requirements:
Always maintain a minimum distance of 1” from the board ends
when fastening your deck boards.

SET:
LOAD:
Beginning on one end of the deck
board, squeeze the Trigger Handle
of the Marksman Pro and set the tool
over the deck board (Remember the
1” setback for board ends). Release
the Trigger Handle allowing the
Spacers to contract and grip the
deck board. A properly adjusted tool clamps securely to the board.
The Tool Feet must be flat on the surface of the board and the tool
centered over the joist.
With the CAMO Marksman Pro tool in place on the deck board, push
the deck board snugly against the previous board. The Spacer creates
and automatic and uniform gap between the boards.
Board abutting a structure:
For situations where you are unable
to set the Pro tool over the board such as the board that abuts a
structure or other obstruction, it may be necessary to face fasten
one edge of that board. Other fastening options include using a
galvanized L bracket below the deck surface when possible.
With the tool set on the board, place
a CAMO EDGE Fastener into each of
the Screw Guides on both ends of the
Marksman Pro tool.
DRIVE:
Steady the Marksman Pro and start driving the EDGE screw
on the outside edge of the board running the drill at full speed
throughout.
Let the screw do the work! Forcing the screw can result
in mushrooming or splitting.
The CAMO EDGE Fastener is designed to spin and auger out material
for approximately 1⁄4” to prevent splitting. Once the screw is started,
you may gently increase pressure and the screw will bite and drive
home quickly. When the shoulder of the CAMO Driver Bit reaches
the Screw Guide, you are finished driving the screw. The depth of
drive is automatically set.
Once you have fastened the first screw on the outside edge, repeat
the same drive instructions on the inside edge of the board. Continue
this process down the length of the board until the entire plank is
installed. Do not skip any joists.
ATTENTION:
To ensure proper performance of the CAMO Marksman Pro, it is
important to regularly check the Screw Guides for deck material
build-up. If material is present, use the Driver Bit to clear the Screw
Guides. If you are installing IPE or other dense deck product, you will
want to perform this action more frequently.
