The platen rollers hold the document against
the reading glass. Two springs are attached to the
back side of the reading units, to feed both thick
and thin documents under the same conditions.

However, if the platen rollers were to touch the
reading glass when rotating, it might leave marks.
Therefore, two spacers are attached to the platen
rollers outside the image reading area, and the
outer diameter of the spacers is a little bit larger
than that of the platen rollers. This provides a
small gap between the platen rollers and the
reading glass when the platen rollers hold the
document against the reading glass. (Refer to Fig.
