6.6 Remote support
A
Remote Support
check box is located in the Network setup options page. When ticked, this function allows
Carlson to remotely support the FiX1, both through access to the Web UI, and through direct SSH access to the
FiX1 computer.
SSH or Secure Shell, is a remote administration protocol that allows users to control and modify their remote servers
over the internet. The service uses cryptographic techniques to ensure that all communications to and from the
remote server happen in an encrypted manner.
With the
Remote Support
check box ticked, the following ‘reverse tunnelling’ process is enabled:
1. Whenever the FiX1 is connected to a network with access to the internet it reaches out to Carlson’s server.
The FiX1 broadcasts its own name and status and it requests two unique ports from Carlson’s server: one
for SSH connection and one for HTTP. This action is performed once every five minutes.
2. When these ports have been established, and a ‘tunnel’ created, the FiX1 makes an outgoing SSH
connection to Carlson’s server.
3. The FiX1 forms two reverse SSH connections using the two ports given in the first step. This allows Carlson
to contact the FiX1 using SSH and HTTP.
Network administrators who do not want the reverse tunnelling process to take place over their network should
untick the
Remote Support
check box.
